We did the rounds of the Quito travel agencies trying to book a last minute Galapagos tour. We finally found Gullivers. We had been told being peak season (early January 2014) we would not find one. Andres booked us a fantastic Luxury 4 night cruise of the Galapagos for about half what everyone else on the boat paid. Not only did we get a great deal, but he organised a day trip prior to the cruise to an island the cruise did not take in. It turned out to be the perfect compliment to the cruise. I would highly recommend Gullliver Tours.
For our Cotopaxi climb we choose Gulliver. It was a good decision: very well organized, good guides (William and Jose) that knew what they were doing. Hostelleria Papagayo (same owner) is also highly recommended and a good base for climbing in the area. Transport to the climbing locations, which sometimes is hard to get to and need a good knowledge of local roads, is in good hands with Gulliver. And all this at a reasonable price! We enjoyed our stay in Papagayo, and the walking with the dogs and manager Raoul doing and excellent job making us feel at home. I planned on doing the lower peaks privately and only Cotopaxi with Gulliver, but I am very glad that I booked the 7 day package! Highly recommended. We rented a car in Ecuador, but that was a bad decision as taxi's are cheap and you don't have to worry about finding your way.
Gulliver have been around for years, with good reason. The Cotopaxi acclimatisation programs are all well designed and are based out of the delightful PapaGayo hotel near Machachi. The guides are all top notch (especially William and Sergio), with a good knowledge of local wildlife and plants. Although you might find cheaper tour operators around Quito, I strongly believe that it is worth paying a little more for a trustworthy and well-established company, especially for relatively high-risk activities like mountaineering.
We were lucky to find Gulliver. We travelled to Ecuador as a family of 5. Gulliver planned a series of excellent and reasonably priced adventures that all of us enjoyed. Our impressive guide Andres shared his expert knowledge of Ecuadorian wildlife and provided insights into the social and economic life in Ecuador that helped us better appreciate the country and its development. From Quito, we took trips to Mitad del Mundo, the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, a magical place to see rare birds and orchids, Laguna Cuicocha, Cayambe, Otavalo, Cotachaci, Lago San Pablo, and the Papallacta hot springs. For the second half of our trip, we stayed at the wonderful Hosteria Papagayo, a great base for the awesome avenue of the volcanoes. We hiked up Cotopaxi and then we biked down to the lagoon at the base of the mountain, both fun and memorably challenging. We went horseback riding on a trail with amazing views of Corazon and Illinizas. We also hiked Pasachoa. We were impressed with everyone from Gulliver, the guides, drivers, staff at Papagayo, and other travelers using the same group tours. We still have more to see in Ecuador, and we will certainly contact Gulliver again. We highly recommend this agency.
